janie cavazos - lgf minister of the month

On Sunday, Becky and I recognized Janie Cavazos as the LGF minister of the month at the Loving God Fellowship (LGF) Salem  Campus.

Janie is one of our team leaders that goes into the Cavazos Center for Latino Youth and Families to conduct a weekly Bible study on Tuesdays.  The Cavazos Center is named after Janie's husband and our brother, the late Cat Cavazos.  Cat started the Street Vision gang intervention program here in our city and now it is named after him and is run by Catholic Community Services.

In recognition of Janie being what LGF is all about and fulfilling the LGF Ministry Model, we presented Janie with a yellow LGF messanger bag.  Afterword, she told us that yellow was Cat's favorite color.

roses for my ladies

IMG_2218 I grow roses in my yard, and here in Oregon, they really grow.

I like to keep them cut for the special ladies in my life that I love - Becky my wife and Kelsey my daughter.

I cut the first ones of the season for Becky and Kelsey yesterday.

Becky always puts hers by her sink in the bathroom and Kelsey always puts hers in her room.

I keep them in roses until the cold weather hits in the fall.

I grow enough for my mom too if I could just get her and dad to move out here from southern Ohio.

What little things do you do for the special people in your life to show them your love?

iris festival 5k - set a personal record

I set another PR today in running the Iris Festival 5K in Keizer, Oregon.  I finished 4th in my age group and 56th overall with a time of 25:14.

Img_2192

It was hot!  Yesterday, temps reached 99 and at race time this the morning it was 80.  That was at 9:15 AM!  I had to slow my planned pace because of the heat, but I'm happy with another PR.  It's my second record in consecutive Saturdays.  Training hard is paying off as I continue to focus on improving speed this year.

I arrived at starting line first (does that count for anything) and put my game face on.

Others quickly joined me, but I had my spot.

We stayed and watched the parade after the race.

There were these pretty girls on horses that kept riding by and waving at me.  Watsup with that?

back home again

Heart_walk_prayer

Heart_walk_tribute

I made it home today from the 2008 American Heart Association Heart Walk in Huntington, West Virginia, where I opened in prayer and walked in tribute to my dad and my friend Cat Cavazos.  The AHA estimated 450 participants this year.  I love hanging around people that are using their life to make a difference for others.

While back east I got to spend some time with my mom and dad and also got to see my sister and her family again, including my new great nephew Bryce Carter.

It's always hard to get on the plane and travel 2,500 miles away from mom and dad and head back to Oregon.  Sometimes all you have to hold on to is the call of God.

I'm back home again and will be working hard at making a difference in our city.  It will be a busy week including a meeting with the director of Habitat for Humanity, a meeting with the director of the Silver Center, and another Bible study at the Theophilus House along with our service at the LGF Salem Campus.  These are all ministries included in the LGF Missions Portfolio.

Running shoes for me and a new bed for Kirby

I got new running shoes

In ramping up to run the Race for the Roses Half Marathon next week in Portland, Oregon, I got a new pair of 11.5 Air Zoom Vomero +2.  I went up a half size to try to save my remaining toenails and went for extra cushion with the Nike Zoom technology to try to protect my ankles that are still not 100%.  I'm looking forward to taking them for a ride later on today.  I'll let you know how they do.  I go through running shoes like crazy with the mileage I run each week.  I try to get 300-400 miles out of each pair, but will not race in a pair that has more than 150 miles on them because I need all of the cushion I can get for a smooth ride.

So,  I got a new pair of running shoes and..........

Easter Bunnies

I got up this morning to pray and do final preparations for Easter at the LGF Salem Campus.  The cats joined me as they always do.  I wanted to share a few pictures with you that I took.  Notice the Easter Basket.

Enjoy my Easter Bunnies!

Stephanie Made My Day!

Steph_becky_and_gaj_2

Wow!  Stephanie Stricklen of KGW in Portland, made my day today!  Steph and her camera man Brian met me and Becky at McNary High School track at 9 AM for an interview that will air on KGW tonight at 5 PM PST.  It was quite a privilege as Steph is one of my heroes that is using her life to make a difference in our day.

The interview is going to be about my life style change and running three marathons in nine weeks to raise money for the American Heart Association for critical research.  Heart disease is the number one killer and I'm running to save lives.

Thanks Stephanie!  It was a honor.

Anisa Bork going back to South Africa

200801_greg_anisa_and_becky_2

Anisa left to go back to her ministry in South Africa today.  I'm so proud of Anisa.  What a great young Christ follower she is.

Five years ago, at the age of 15, Anisa was coming to my house and playing basketball with me and my family and now she is on the front line of ministry, utilizing her life to make a difference in our day.

Becky and I had lunch with Anisa at Johns, one of my favorite resterants in Keizer.  we had a great time together as we always do.

Say a prayer for Anisa.  She is flying approximately 24 hours and has a 13 hour layover in Frankfurt Germany.

Click on the player below and listen to Anisa share about her ministry in South Africa.  It was taped at the LGF Salem Campus this month.

Know that you are loved,
