Check out his pic.

Opps!  Wrong pic.  That is a picture I took of a tiger at the Portland Zoo on Friday when me, Becky, Kelsey and a friend of Kelsey's was there.

Here is our Tiger resting in my chair.

IMG_2257

He is an Orange Tabby.

We adopted him at the same place we got Kirby - Salem Friends of Felines.

We named him Tiger.

He is very affectionate and he loves to play.

summer solstice 10K 2008 race report

IMG_2239 I ran the Summer Solstice 10K Friday evening in Salem, Oregon.  It was a couple of firsts for me - my first 10k, and my first night race.

Conditions were tough with the race time temperature at 86 degrees, high humidity and pollen floating through the air on the trails.  There were a couple of times that I sucked up the white snow flakes from the cottonwood trees.  It made breathing very difficult and it took me 4 miles to get my breathing in some sort of rhythm. My legs felt great the entire race, but breathing was tough.

My goal was 52.33 and I did it in 55:40.  Overall, I was pleased considering the conditions.  And it was an automatic PR for me since it was my first 10K.  It doesn't get any better than that!

My whole family was with me which made it great.  Becky, Austin, Kelsey and family friend David SannaLGF'ers Gina and Rich Harris were also there.  Gina ran the 10K, PR'ed (it was her first 10k) and came in 2nd place in her age division.  It was a great evening.

To top it off, I came home and played three pickup basketball games with Austin, David and Kelsey!

My splits:

mile 1 - 8:24
2 - 9:08
3 - 9:03
4 - 9:05
5 - 8:57
6 - 8:56

Avg pace = 8:56; 853 calories burned

a great lady in my life

2008 Tennis Picture She just finished her junior year of high school yesterday.

She has made straight A's throughout middle school and high school.

She was inducted into the National Honor Society her junior year.

She played varsity tennis her junior year.

She is now officially a senior.

She has been elected president of the National Honor Society for her senior year.

She has a heart to make a difference in her day.

She is my daughter Kelsey.

I thank God for her.

I'm a proud dad.

roses for my ladies

IMG_2218 I grow roses in my yard, and here in Oregon, they really grow.

I like to keep them cut for the special ladies in my life that I love - Becky my wife and Kelsey my daughter.

I cut the first ones of the season for Becky and Kelsey yesterday.

Becky always puts hers by her sink in the bathroom and Kelsey always puts hers in her room.

I keep them in roses until the cold weather hits in the fall.

I grow enough for my mom too if I could just get her and dad to move out here from southern Ohio.

What little things do you do for the special people in your life to show them your love?

i beat austin

Me and Austin hit the gym together again today.  The old man had it going today and I beat Austin in basketball 21-14!  Oh yeah.  That's what I'm talk-in about!  Bring it!

.....now the rest of the story.  He beat me the 2nd game 22-15......  and the 3rd game 22-6.  Oh well, it felt good while it lasted.

After the three games, we worked on his three point and foul shooting with some drills and headed upstairs for an upper body and core workout.

My legs are hurting!  And I have an 8 mile run tomorrow.

Ibuprofen is my friend.

working out with my son

I did my 2 mile recovery run on the treadmill at the gym this morning since it was raining.  My son Austin went with me. I did an easy 2.03 miles in 25:28 and burned 240 calories in the process.  My left calf was pretty tight and I think my body will welcome the rest day tomorrow after the PR on Saturday and the 11 mile run yesterday

After the easy recovery run, me and Austin did a lower body workout with weights and I also did some core exercises.  After that, we headed to the basketball court and worked on his three point shooting after which he beat me in a game of pickup 21-5.  I can remember when I could beat him but it's been a while.  Now he outweighs me by 70 pounds and is a couple of inches taller than me.  Now he schools his old man!  Oh to be 19 again.....

....on second thought, NOT!

my favorite tennis player

Img_2158

That's my daughter Kelsey.  She plays varisity tennis at McNary High School.  Click here for some more pictures.

I'm her number one fan and I can't get her to autograph a tennis ball for me.  What's up with that?

back home again

Heart_walk_prayer

Heart_walk_tribute

I made it home today from the 2008 American Heart Association Heart Walk in Huntington, West Virginia, where I opened in prayer and walked in tribute to my dad and my friend Cat Cavazos.  The AHA estimated 450 participants this year.  I love hanging around people that are using their life to make a difference for others.

While back east I got to spend some time with my mom and dad and also got to see my sister and her family again, including my new great nephew Bryce Carter.

Bryce_2

It's always hard to get on the plane and travel 2,500 miles away from mom and dad and head back to Oregon.  Sometimes all you have to hold on to is the call of God.

I'm back home again and will be working hard at making a difference in our city.  It will be a busy week including a meeting with the director of Habitat for Humanity, a meeting with the director of the Silver Center, and another Bible study at the Theophilus House along with our service at the LGF Salem Campus.  These are all ministries included in the LGF Missions Portfolio.

My Baby Girl's Birthday

BD 2008

We celebrated my baby girl's birthday yesterday.  She is my resurrection baby as she was born Easter Sunday morning, 1991.

BD 2008 Cake

Now she is a junior in High School, plays on the varsity tennis team and an "A" student with a heart to make a difference in her day.

Well, she wouldn't let me post any BD pictures of her on my blog, so all you get is a shot of the balloons and the ice cream cake.

I love ice cream cake!
